2021 Cullen Diana Madeline 750ML

The enchanting Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot exudes a unique intensity, purity, and resonance. Reflecting its environment and commitment to sustainable production, this wine stands as one of Australia’s most exquisite and authentic expressions.

In 1971, founders Diana and Kevin Cullen, guided by Dr. John Gladstones, established their initial vineyard in Wilyabrup, transitioning from sheep and cattle farming. Today, the mature 28-hectare dry-grown vineyard serves as a model for biodynamic and sustainable farming, emphasizing the belief that working in harmony with nature enhances the site’s individuality. Winemaker Vanya Cullen asserts that this philosophy translates into a profound consistency in the quality, freshness, and character of the fruit.

The grapes were hand-harvested when tannin ripeness, flavor profile and acidity balance were at their best. Partially fermented in oak barrels, the wine is then matured in new oak barrels (30%-70%, depending on the vintage) and seasoned, tightly grained French oak barrels. The wine is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (93%), Merlot (5%) and small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot, each variety adding to the complexity of the wine.

“Cullen’s biodynamic home-block red is a deep well of terroir-driven aromas and flavors. Concentrated yet lucid, it conjures wild West Aussie bush and coastal notes. There’s eucalyptus, dusty red earth and the blossoms of local Marri trees amidst tart cherry and red currant. It’s briny, savory and spicy. The tannins are muscular but ultrafine, sappy and textural.”
