Mount Marys original pinot noir vines, a mix of many clones, were sourced from Western Victoria in 1971 material acquired prior to the consideration of individual clonal selections. These have been supplemented by newer plantings (including MV6, 777 and 115 clones) on American rootstocks. Simple winemaking techniques, to reflect the character of vineyard site, are followed by barrel ageing in new oak barriques (25%) for 16 months. Mount Mary Pinot Noir is typified by fragrant strawberry and cherry aromas and a supple, evenly proportioned palate.
Drinking Window: 2021-2024
The Pinot Noir is supple and fresh with strong tannins which need more time to develop but will blossom into a magnificent example of the style.
“The light ruby hue belies the whorl of intense flavour. Pretty aromatics. It bursts out with raspberries and cherries, then richer strawberry compote infused with bitter herbs, cloves and sarsaparilla. French oak is neatly tucked away, but acts as a support, while superfine tannins glide across a lighter- to medium-bodied frame. A beautiful and beguiling wine.”
